IMPORTANT NOTE!

WakeUp! will activate functions built into the Newton which utilizes 4K of the internal store. In order to reclaim this space, even after the product has been removed, you must erase the contents of the Newton entirely (refer to Reset, erase all data, instructions in your MessagePad Handbook).

This demo of WakeUp! includes the speach option described in the documentation that follows. This demo version of WakeUp! has been restricted to only allow you to set alarms up to 1 (one) hour in advance. To order the fully enabled version of WakeUp! for $19.95 plus s&h, call Accountable Software, Inc. at 800-293-NEWT or 610-622-2225.

Introduction

WakeUp! provides your Newton MessagePad with the features of a travel alarm clock.

WakeUp! allows you to customize the alarm sound, volume and the length of time that the alarm will sound.

WakeUp! is shipped with two versions, one that includes speech and one that does not. You only need to load one of the WakeUp! packages onto your Newton. Both products are functionally equivalent except for the use of speech and the amount of space they require on the Newton. WakeUp! without speech is provided for users that have a limited amount of space available on their Newton or PCMCIA card. WakeUp! with speech will speak three phrases at specific times:

WakeUp! When the alarm initially sounds
Snooze When the snooze button is tapped
Off When the alarm close box is tapped

The use of the words snooze and off are helpful in identifying which button has been tapped when silencing an alarm.

Installation

You need to use the Newton Connection Kit or a Newton Package Install program to load WakeUp! onto either the Newton or a PCMCIA card. Please refer to the instructions or manual provided with your Newton installation program to install the WakeUp! package.

WakeUp! is shipped with two versions, one that includes speech and one that does not. Both versions of WakeUp! are on the diskettes.

 Macintosh Windows
 WakeUp! (speech) WakeUpS.pkg
 WakeUp! (no speech) WakeUpNS.pkg

WakeUp! is installed in a compressed format, in other words, it uses up the least amount of space possible on your Newton.

WakeUp! will activate functions built into the Newton which utilizes 4K of the internal store. In order to reclaim this space, even after the product has been removed, you must erase the contents of the Newton entirely (refer to Reset, erase all data, instructions in your MessagePad Handbook).

Note: you can only install one WakeUp! package onto your Newton. Both packages are the same except for the use of speech, which takes up a large amount of space.

Setting the Alarm Date and Time

The Date and Time controls function just like in the Newton Prefs. Make sure that the am/pm indicator is set properly for the alarm time.

WakeUp! is also dependent upon the Newton to be set to the correct time and date. Refer to your Newton MessagePad Handbook if you need assistance in setting the date and time for your Newton.

Setting the Alarm Sound and Volume

Tap on Alarm Sound to select the sound that will be repeated when the WakeUp! alarm is activated.

Tap on Volume to determine the loudness at which the repeating sound will be played. You may find that the Loud volume is not required to help you WakeUp!

Setting the Snooze Length

Tap on Snooze Length to set the amount of time that will pass after the Snooze Button is tapped before the alarm will sound again. If you select 10 minutes, then the alarm will activate ten minutes after you tap the snooze button. There is no limit to the number of times that the snooze button can be used for a specific alarm.

Setting the Alarm Length

Tap on Alarm Length to control the amount of time which the alarm will remain active. If you select continuous, then the alarm will continue to stay active until the Off Button is tapped, or until the alarm is deleted. If you select 5 minutes, then the alarm will turn itself off after five minutes if you have not tapped the Off Button or Snooze Button.

The use of sounds consumes more power than most operations on a Newton, therefore, you should limit the length of time that the alarm will sound before shutting itself off. If the Newton is plugged into an AC adaptor, then the continuous setting is helpful to require either the Snooze or Off button to be selected in order to deactivate the alarm.

Finding Alarms That Have Been Set

Tap the Overview Button (the Dot between the up and down arrows) in order to review Alarms That Have Been Set. Once the Alarms That Have Been Set floating window is open, you can use the up and down arrows to scroll through additional alarms (only six alarms can be displayed at one time). To select an alarm in order to change or delete it, simply tap on the line which displays the alarm overview information.

Using the Menu Buttons

The Set Alarm/Change Alarm button is used to activate an alarm or to change an alarm that was already set. You must select this button in order to set the alarm or to change an existing alarm. Alarms are NOT saved automatically by closing WakeUp! or selecting New, you must tap the Set Alarm/Change Alarm button in order to save your changes.

The New Button is used to discard changes to an existing alarm, and allow you to set a new alarm.

The Action Button (the button that looks like an envelope) contains two choices, Delete This Alarm and Delete All Alarms. Delete This Alarm will delete the alarm that you are currently editing and resets the date and time to the current date and time. Delete All Alarms will delete all alarms that have been set by WakeUp!

Using the Snooze and Off Buttons

When WakeUp! sounds an alarm, it will display a window that has a large snooze button and an close box within a floating window. Since the Newton screen is pressure sensitive (you write on the Newton by applying pressure, the pen is nothing more than plastic), you can tap the snooze button with your finger.

The Snooze Button covers nearly the entire screen, and also displays the current time. Tapping this button will turn off the alarm for the amount of time that was selected in the Snooze Length list of choices. Once snooze is selected WakeUp! will close until the alarm needs to be activated again.

You can disable an alarm after the snooze button has been tapped. First, tap the overview button, and select the alarm within the list (it will usually be the first one in the list) in order to change it. Then choose Delete This Alarm from the Action Button.

The Off Button is actually the close box on the alarm floating window. The advantage of having this button so small is that it is difficult to hit this Off Button by accident. Selecting this button will turn off this alarm for good.

Using the Assist Button

WakeUp! takes advantage of the Assist feature provided by the Newton MessagePad. You can use this feature by writing

 WakeUp! date time

Other keywords which will activate WakeUp! are: Alarm, WakeUp, and Wake up. You do not need to include the quotes and you do not have to capitalize your words when writing them yourself.

The date and time can be written in many formats. Date and time use your Locale settings (found in prefs) to determine your date and time formats. Selecting US for country would indicate that dates should be entered in the format mm/dd/yy (year is optional).

WakeUp! also provides intelligence by recognizing keywords such as tomorrow. Also you do not need to supply a date. If you tap Assist and write WakeUp! 5am then WakeUp! will open with the date set to the next time that 5am will occur (which might be tommorow).
